UKFN WEEKLY ROUND-UP 11/4/19

If you would like to circulate a brief message to the UKFN mailing list,
you can send it to info at fluids.ac.uk by Thursday noon.

A. UKFN MESSAGES

FROM: Nick Daish, 11/4/19
SUBJECT: New videos - fluids researchers talk about their work

Tom Crawford (https://tomrocksmaths.com/) has released the first of a
new series of videos commissioned by UKFN featuring past photo/video
competition winners. This month, Luke Muscutt of the University of
Southampton talks about 'How Plesiosaurs Ruled the Ocean using their
Flippers'. Watch the video on YouTube at
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=chfG229nLZI.

Tom is also producing a series of video shorts on projects presented at
APS-DFD in Denver, from a collaboration with Nicole Sharpe of FYFD
(http://fyfluiddynamics.com/):

 	* 'Air Pollution Risk of Cooking Oil Droplets'
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fzfwU9UUrdc
 	* 'How does Stone Skipping work?'
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ct2WYONTXcI
 	* 'Vortex Ring Collisions and Transition to Turbulence'
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7npYyXFZ3w

There will be more in the coming months.

FROM: Nick Daish, 11/4/19
SUBJECT: UK Fluids Conference - abstract deadline extended to 30 April

The Organising Committee for the 2019 UK Fluids Conference (Cambridge
27-29 August, http://ukfluids2019.bpi.cam.ac.uk/) send the following
message:

'We have had a great response to the UK Fluids Meeting 2019, with over
120 abstracts already submitted. The meeting is shaping up to be an
excellent event, and we have a series of outstanding keynote speakers.
We will be in touch in early May about abstracts, but WE HAVE DECIDED TO
EXTEND THE ABSTRACT SUBMISSION DEADLINE TO 30TH APRIL as we are aware
that a number of people missed the original deadline for submission of
their abstract.'

FROM: Nick Daish, 11/4/19
SUBJECT: ERCOFTAC news and events

(1) NEW ERCOFTAC SIG #49 NON-IDEAL COMPRESSIBLE FLUID DYNAMICS (NICFD)

A new ERCOFTAC Special Interest Group has been launched, focusing on
non-ideal compressible fluid dynamics (NICFD).

'NICFD deals with flows of dense vapours, supercritical fluids and
two-phase fluids, whose properties significantly depart from those of
ideal gases. NICFD flows occur in numerous heterogeneous industrial
applications, such as unconventional turbomachinery (ORC turbines, scCO2
compressors), combustors operating with supercritical fluids, heat
pumping systems, and in many chemical processes.'
