A. UKFN MESSAGES

FROM: Nick Daish, 14/07/2022
SUBJECT: UKFN Thesis Prize 2022 - results
The UKFN Executive Committee is delighted to announce the results of the
2022 Thesis Prize for the best thesis in fluids examined during 2021.

 	* Winner is CRAIG DUGUID with thesis 'The influence of convection on
tidal flows [1]', Department of Applied Mathematics at the University of
Leeds.
 	* Runner-up is LUKE MASINI with thesis 'On Transonic Wing Shock
Unsteadiness [2]', Department of Mechanical, Materials and Aerospace
Engineering at the University of Liverpool.

Warmest congratulations to both for producing outstanding PhD
dissertations that greatly impressed the Executive Committee.

For more prize-winning fluids dissertations, see the past winners and
runners-up on the UKFN Connect page [3].

FROM: Nick Daish, 23/06/2022
SUBJECT: New UKFN photo/video competition #12 - UPDATE
We are pleased to announce a new competition, open to all UK-based
fluids researchers, for the best new photo and video on the theme of
‘FLUIDS IN THE NATURAL WORLD’. The winning photo and video will each
receive a prize of £200. Full details of how to enter may be found on
the UKFN Connect page https://fluids.ac.uk/connect. The closing date is
31 JULY 2022.

_Please note the photo or video does not necessarily have to feature the
natural world explicitly, e.g. a photo of a wave on the beach or a video
of a bird in flight, although these would be acceptable entries: any
media from your research would qualify provided it relates to some
aspect of the natural environment, which you should briefly explain in
the entry's description._

FROM: Ignazio Maria Viola, 01/06/2022
SUBJECT: UKFN Thesis Prize - 2023 and beyond

We are pleased to announce that from now onwards, Internal and External
Examiners can nominate a PhD candidate for the UKFN Prize for the best
UK Fluids thesis at any time of the year.

The thesis must be for a doctoral degree in fluids-related research
awarded by a UK institution. Examiners can submit the nomination to
competition at fluids.ac.uk as soon as the PhD examination has taken place:
a citation of 300-500 words is required from each Examiner together with
brief details of the candidate and their thesis. Full details are given
here [4]. The winner of the Award receives a prize of £500.

Nominations for theses examined in 2022 will be entered in the 2023
competition, and must be submitted at any time before 1st March 2023.
The winner will be announced by 31st May 2023.
