A. UKFN MESSAGES

FROM: Nick Daish, NFFDy Hub, 12/01/2023
SUBJECT: NFFDy Summer Programme 2023 on 'Data in Fluids'
DETAILS: A Summer Programme on the theme 'Data in Fluids' is being
organised as part of the EPSRC-funded National Fellowships in Fluid
Dynamics scheme (NFFDy). This 6-week residential programme will take
place in Cambridge from 10 July to 18 August 2023. Participants will
carry out short, intensive research projects in small teams. In
addition, there will be an instructive component with lectures and
tutorials given by invited speakers.

Places are reserved for all NFFDy fellows, and 13 to 17 additional
places will be available for other early-career researchers. This
announcement outlines who can apply, how to apply and what support is
offered. IF YOU MIGHT BE INTERESTED, PLEASE READ THE DETAILS BELOW AND
VISIT THE SUMMER PROGRAMME PADLET [1].

Who can apply?
Early-career researchers, from recently-graduated PhDs to early-career
lecturers or assistant professors, working in a UK institution eligible
for UKRI funding.

How to apply?
_Expression of interest:_

If you might be interested in attending, please email Nick Daish
(ncd1 at cam.ac.uk) by 20/1/2023 with the following details:

 	* name
 	* institution
 	* current research area
 	* what you would like to do at the SP, e.g. if you have a project in
mind

We will aim to connect you with groups of people with common interests.

_Brokerage events:_

There will be two optional Zoom brokerage events, where project ideas
can be discussed in person, in small breakout rooms, at 14:00-16:00 on
23/1/2023 & 26/1/2023.

_Proposal submission:_
Draft proposals are displayed on a separate padlet [2]. The NFFDy
fellows have proposed some projects, which are guaranteed to be
selected. Applicants can discuss joining one of these projects with the
investigators or can propose a new project themselves.

For each project, a proposal is required by 14/2/2023 containing:

 	* project title
 	* a summary of the project, how it relates to the theme 'Data in
Fluids' and the proposed activities during the Summer Programme (up to
500 words);
 	* the applicants and the skills they bring to the project, both
technical and other (up to 500 words);
 	* the data that will be used in the project, and whether it will be
generated before or during the project, or both (up to 200 words).

The new projects will be ranked by a panel and selected to fill the
remaining available places by 28/2/2023.

Applicants are encouraged to discuss application with their PI, if
applicable, before they do so.

What financial support is available?
Rooms with self-catering facilities have been reserved in college
accommodation for the duration of the programme. The NFFDy Hub will
provide 75% of costs for this accommodation. Applicants must provide the
remainder, along with their travel and subsistence costs. We estimate
these together will be in the region of £1,000-£1,500.

Contact
Please email Nick Daish (ncd1 at cam.ac.uk) with any queries.

SUBJECT: Special Issue 'Flow Control Actuators and Their Diverse Fluid
Dynamic Applications'
DEADLINE: 20/01/2023
DETAILS: Most studies involving flow control tend to focus on the
understanding of flow physics caused by devices and on the optimization
of the performances of these devices. In addition to aerodynamics, these
actuators have been used for different settings. We invite investigators
to contribute original research articles and review articles addressing
flow control actuators that facilitate advances in aircraft use or
introduce new horizons for their applications. More information may be
found here [5].
